So I just got back from an Iyengar class, here in Andover. The teacher's bio says that she is a longtime student of Patricia Walden, which piqued my interest because I am thinking about trying some classes with Patricia in the fall.
The sequencing felt a bit weird, though not terribly damaging. But the rhythm! Very kind of spastic and abrupt. The teacher was knowledgeable about alignment and anatomy, but not very skilled in either her language or the way she moved us from one pose into another. What I liked is that we did lots of backbending (from salambasana through ustrasana to urdhva dhanurasana) and we did pinchya and sirsasana and sarvangasana, all with long holds -- that's something I never get in most public classes. And we did King Arthur! She called it a "pigeon variation" -- not nearly as witty or fun.
But I don't know if I can take her style. She was nice, but there was nothing calming about the structure and tone of the class. She was a bit frenetic, without meaning to be. Alas. Ujayii breathing not allowed either, which feels so foreign to me.
I'm considering trying a Forrest teacher this week as well. Not necessarily because I think I will like it, but just to see. I'm off to China on Monday, so eager to get many classes in before I go. xoxo --Catherine
